Butler or Housekeeper? Define the Household Role

Before asking for a butler or housekeeper, write down the work your household needs. Cleaning rooms, coordinating other staff and arranging guest service are different responsibilities. A job title alone does not settle which of them one person or service will undertake.

The practical question is whether you need someone to carry out an agreed task list, someone to coordinate household operations, or a role that combines specified duties. Define that first, then discuss the suitable skills, time and authority.

Look at the responsibilities behind the title

The Royal Household’s profile of its Deputy Sergeant Footman describes front-of-house supervision, team schedules, travel logistics and daily tasks. It also discusses role-specific training in valeting, wines, glass and china, alongside event supervision. This is a first-party example of one employer’s hospitality role, not a universal list of duties for every butler or housekeeper.

For your household, separate the work someone performs personally from the work they coordinate. Preparing a dining space, serving guests, arranging a caterer and approving a supplier’s bill should not be bundled together without discussion. Ask which responsibilities the candidate or provider can undertake and what remains with you or another specialist.

Separate a housekeeping booking from household management

In Singapore, BUTLER’s regular-housekeeping page describes agreed everyday upkeep, including accessible surfaces, floors, bins and room tasks. Additional requests and specialist work need their own scope and time confirmed. Booking that service does not automatically commission every duty associated with the profession of a butler.

The group’s property-management website describes a broader operating model involving household routines, staff coordination, guest readiness and specialist partners. Those are published service descriptions to compare with your needs; the actual arrangement still depends on the agreed brief.

BUTLER Magazine is part of the BUTLER group. These two services illustrate a scope distinction, rather than a claim that one job title, brand or package can meet every household need. The Royal Household is an independent source example; no relationship with BUTLER is implied.

Write the tasks and decision authority separately

Start with a short list of recurring duties and occasional requests. Put personal service, cleaning, coordination and technical work on separate lines. Identify the hours or occasions when support is needed, rather than assuming one person is continuously available.

Then define the decisions. Who may arrange an appointment, approve an additional task or commit money? Which decisions need the household’s approval first? A clear limit is useful whether you employ a person directly or engage a service team.

Illustrative example: for a dinner at home, you might want the room prepared, an external caterer’s arrival coordinated and service during the meal. Record those as three duties. Confirm who performs each, who approves the catering order and whether clearing up afterwards is included. This is a planning example, not an offered package or reported client experience.

Ask for experience relevant to the actual work: delicate tableware, guest service or coordinating suppliers, where those duties are needed. Do not infer all specialist skills from a title. Agree how someone should raise a request outside the role or seek help for work requiring a specialist.

A short household role brief

Review the brief with the candidate or provider before agreeing the arrangement. If you need household coordination as well as hands-on cleaning, make both responsibilities explicit. If you need only an agreed clean, say that clearly too.
