Singapore Savings Bonds allow early redemption, but the proceeds are not immediate cash. MAS states that a valid monthly redemption request is paid, with accrued interest, by the second business day of the following month. For a bill due sooner, compare that timetable with the payment deadline before relying on the money.
This guide focuses on the redemption process. It does not recommend a bond purchase, choose an emergency-fund amount or set a personal investment plan.
Find the monthly request window
MAS’s How to Redeem page lists a window opening at 6pm on the first business day of the month and closing at 9pm on the fourth-last business day. Submission hours are 7am to 9pm, Monday to Saturday, excluding public holidays. Use the current official dates and your bank’s service instructions when planning a request.
Write down two dates separately: the last date you can submit for the current cycle, and the payout deadline. A request made early in the window does not become a same-day withdrawal.
Match the cycle to the bill
Illustrative example: a cash-funded bondholder has a bill due later this week. A request accepted in this month’s window has a published payout deadline in the following month. That is the date to compare with the bill, rather than assuming an early submission will provide money before the week ends.
If the current window has already closed, check the next available cycle before making a plan around the proceeds. The wait depends on the monthly calendar; it is not a fixed number of days starting whenever you decide you need the money.
Keep the comparison simple: the bill’s due date, the usable request window and the published payment deadline. Do not rely on the redemption covering a bill that falls before its published payout deadline.
Check where the money will arrive
For cash investments, the MAS Savings Bonds FAQs direct redemption requests through the participating banks’ supported channels, with proceeds credited to the designated bank account linked to the individual CDP account. For SRS-funded bonds, submit through the SRS operator; proceeds return to the SRS account. Redeeming an SRS-funded bond is therefore not the same as receiving ordinary spending money in a bank account.
Before submitting, confirm which funding route applies to the holding you want to redeem. Check the relevant account when looking for the proceeds rather than assuming the money returns to whichever bank you use day to day.
Review the request before confirming
MAS permits redemption in S$500 multiples up to the amount held in each issue. A S$2 transaction fee applies to each request, and a submitted redemption request cannot be amended or cancelled. Early redemption has no exit penalty, but the bank transaction fee still applies.
Confirm the bond issue and amount on the submission screen. Keep the acknowledgement and the relevant payment date in your records. This is a check of your intended request, not a reason to redeem a particular amount.
A short redemption timing check
- Check whether the holding was bought with cash or SRS funds.
- Confirm the current submission window through MAS and the supported bank channel.
- Compare the payout deadline with the date you need the money.
- Review the issue, amount and fee before submitting.
- Keep the acknowledgement and check the correct receiving account.
For the broader question of how much money to keep accessible, see our emergency-fund planning guide. The narrower point here is timing: permission to redeem early does not mean the proceeds are available immediately.
